AIR INSIDE THE buried DOME
AIR QUALITY CAN BE AN ISSUE WHEN LIVING IN AN UNDERGROUND CONCRETE DOME
Humidity, temperature, and cleanliness are key!
We have a RenewAire EV200. This is an energy recovery ventilation unit. It filters the incoming air to prevent pollen and other contaminants from entering the home. It also does a heat exchange so in the winter, heat energy is conserved, and in the summer, cool air is conserved.
The biggest issue in the dome however is the humidity.
Buried homes tend to have a higher humidity. The ideal humidity is between 40 and 50 percent. Our ERV helps to maintain the humidity going in and out, however if the humidity outside is too high, we have learned that it is better to turn off the ERV unit until it goes back below 60 percent. We use special monitors so we know when to turn off the ERV (see affiliate links below). On days when the temperature outside is nice and the humidity is low, we simply open windows rather than use the ERV unit.
In addition, we have a dehumidifier in the bathroom and in the kitchen we have the vent over the stove, both which we use as needed.
