Home Gardening
Start small, grow big!
Gardening is a relaxing and enjoyable pastime. Whether you are harvesting flowers to bring joy into your home, growing plants that beautify the yard, or growing herbs, fruits, and vegetables to supplement your daily diet, the rewards are endless. We garden for all of those reasons but lately I find that anything new I add to the yard must be either edible or purposeful (more than just looking pretty), hence the ever expanding gardens! Bye bye all that grass....hello less mowing!
My first edible garden was a tiny little thing along the fence in my back yard. You can see it in the picture for Building Our Garden below. Over the years it has grown and changed with our needs. Every year it continues to grow and expand around our yard. This year we purchased and planted two Goji bushes (They are a considered a super-food and an antioxidant and great to add to our healthy smoothies.). I can't wait to reap the rewards!
REASONS TO GROW YOUR OWN FOOD:
1. No genetic modifications (if you buy non GMO)
2. No harmful pesticides or fertilizers (if you choose not use them)
3. Not processed and therefore much healthier. NOTE - When you do need to buy fresh vegetables or fruits - stick to LOCALLY grown in season produce and read about the DIRTY DOZEN first.

Building The Garden
No matter how busy you are, you can grow vegetables! Even if you grow them in pots, you can do it. Start small, and go from there. We weren't sure about starting a vegetable garden at first either. We were both working two jobs and had very little time to invest in it. So we decided to start small and go from there. It was really so simple that we have NOT stopped making the garden(s) bigger every year since! Read more about how...

What We Grow
Start with the easiest vegetables and herbs. Ones you KNOW you will actually eat. We grow a lot of vegetables, fruits, herbs, flowers, bushes, trees, etc. We like anything that flowers and anything we can eat! We add more every year and sometimes it feels like we are running out of space...but then we suddenly find something new to add and 'wa-la,' we find a spot for it! We really don't need all that grass anyway! Read more...

Preservation and Storage
Weather you grow the food yourself or buy it fresh in bulk when it is in season, being able to persevere and store it for the winter months is a skill everyone should have! Of course I am all for keeping this as simple as possible. The last thing I want to do is be in the kitchen all day preserving and storing food - especially in the summer! I would rather be outside enjoying life! So when it comes to cooking meals and storing and preserving food, it needs to be as easy as I can make it!
