Simple Cleaning & Tips
Simple Alternatives to harmful chemical cleaners.
I believe in making my own home cleaners. There is no reason to buy all those fancy name cleaners with ingredients I can't even read the names of. Why would I put that on a counter that food goes on? No, I think I will stick to my safe, and highly effective, homemade cleaners!

Some simple ways to manage the daily chores!
DISH LIQUID
I just use Dr. Bronner's Liquid Castile Soap directly from the bottle (undiluted) to hand wash all my kitchen items that need to be hand washed. I personally prefer either the eucalyptus or the lavender, however there are many other scents to choose from! NOTE: I do switch out the top of the bottle because I do not like the soap flying out like crazy when I turn the bottle upside down. I used to use the top from an old bottle of T.N. Dickinsons Witch Hazel instead however I recently bought a replacement pump head, extended the tube using a straw and some tape an now it's a pump and I don't even have to pick up the bottle at all! The pump head I use is at the bottom of the page (an Amazon affiliate link).

A note about Castile Soap:
It is an all natural vegetable oil-based soap (as opposed to animal fat-based soap) that is NOT harmful to the environment. I use Dr. Bronner's Liquid Castile soap. Find out more here: https://www.drbronner.com/customer-service/faqs/

LAUNDRY SOAP
4 cups of Arm & Hammer Washing Soda
2 bars of Dr. Bronner's Castile Soap (5 ounce each bar)
(I use either peppermint or lavender)
Cut the soap into one inch pieces and add ingredients to a food processor. Cover with a towel and pulse it until it is as close to a powder as you can get it. Allow powder to settle before opening. Store in air tight container. Add 2-3 tablespoons to a load of laundry!

A few things we do to keep cleaning as simple as possible:
- I keep the recipe right on the bottle of cleaner so every time I need to re-make it I have the recipe right in front of me - no looking for it! Simplicity at its best!
- Keep all surfaces clear and your house will always look neat and clean, even if it isn't!
- Have a place for everything: keys, coats, pocketbook, etc. Make sure the place is simple and convenient so that it's just as simple to hang it up as throw it on the couch or dining room table! This will go a long way to keeping the house neat.
Keep ants, cats, and other critters out and/or from biting you!
ANT REPELLENT
Keep ants out of your home by moistening a cotton ball with peppermint essential oil and wiping it around doorways and windows and anywhere else an ant may enter your home. They DO NOT like peppermint! BLACK FLY REPELLANT To help keep black flies from biting use pine essential oil. We also make a 50/50 blend of pine essential oil and cedarwood essential oil. We simply use a cotton ball and rub it on the back of our necks and behind our ears (where black flies love to bite!). SOAPY PLANT SPRAY Mix 2 cups of water and 1.5 teaspoons of liquid castile soap in a spray bottle. Spray directly on the leaves of your plants and re-apply after it rains to keep aphids and other insects away. This is safe for your edible garden plants and trees as castile soap is a vegetable based soap. |
