WE CALL IT SHELTER, BUT WHAT IT IS REALLY ABOUT IS MAINTAINING BODY TEMPERATURE!
There's a multitude of ways to create a shelter depending upon the circumstances! And depending upon your needs, the shelter you live in will vary.
Home size
There are definitely advantages to smaller homes... less expensive to build, buy, maintain, clean, heat, cool, and so much more!
COMFORT
Shelter is really about being able to maintain a safe and healthy body temperature!
In our situation, that means our home. A home provides safety and comfort from the outside weather.
This home is extra special because it should never freeze inside. Temperatures should remain about 55 degrees F in the winter and 70 F in the summer! It will take very little to heat it up from 55 F to 70 F as opposed to heating it from 30 F or even lower!
We have gone through one winter buried and we are not even done closing in the dome and we were not disappointed having only used about 1.5 cords of wood! That is a very easy amouont to process and stay on top of to stay warm. In fact we know people that need up to 10 cords for one winter!
And the summer is even more efficient. We just had our first heat wave and even though temperatures reached the high 90's the dome didn't go over 72 degrees! No air conditioning should ever be needed to be comfortable even on the hottest days.
This is truly an energy efficient, and sustainable home!
